10 Views from the Chemical Coast: Cork, Ireland

Audio walk produced for ArtTrail: Multiple Endings | 2010

An audio walk among the streets and waterways of Cork City, Ireland. The walk took cues from specific architectural features (including stone walls, bridges, and new, untenanted glass-fronted buildings), the perceptual qualities of different places (narrow, damp, bright), and specific sites (such as the gasworks, the old location of the Royal Cork Institute, and the old harbor).

Because of Cork’s location on and in the river Lee the potential implications of climate change feel very tangible. Serious flooding the previous autumn, made the effects of sea level rise seem quite possible for many residents.

In addtion to the audio walk, a presentation and discussion on virtual understandings of place was given in collaboration with William Lynn, a computer graphics researcher at Cork Institute of Technology developing open source tools to visualize flooding in urban areas.
